UAS Intent & Path Prediction
Overview
As uncrewed air systems (UAS) become more prevalent in airspace, there will be a growing need to improve UAS classification - from identifying the object type to understanding its intent and predicting its future trajectory. Octa, Dynamic Intelligence Solutions’ flagship product, is being developed to do just that.
The Capability
Octa is a system that identifies and classifies target objects in the air and on land based on their changing and unpredictable behaviour, using a range of statistical and machine learning (ML) techniques. The system has been further developed under a DASA competition to enhance its capabilities beyond identifying the type of object being tracked, enabling it to understand the object’s intent and predict its long-term future path.

This work utilises Dynamic Intelligence Solutions’ in-house UAS simulation capabilities to generate various UAS mission types, expanding Octa’s ability to provide more detailed and nuanced information about UAS behaviour. This technology can be deployed even in highly congested airspace, such as airports, where determining the mission or intent of multiple UAS would otherwise pose a significant challenge for site operators. Octa’s enhanced system will provide even earlier warnings and a deeper understanding, helping to protect restricted airspace and other vehicles from unauthorised UAS activity.

Use Cases
There is a wide range of potential applications and enhancements for this capability. The key exploitation areas identified are:
Future target path prediction for tactical planning and interception
Real-time intent and threat level analysis
Cross-domain tracking and classification, from UAS to ground vehicles
Adaptive ML capabilities for high-intensity environments
